CEREAL BOXES NEEDED
In writer's workshop, children will spend the first few weeks back from break writing their own realistic fiction book series. To celebrate their stories, they will take home a "box set" of their work. Their stories will fit nicely into decorated cereal boxes, so if you could help send in any empty Cheerios boxes your family has that would be great! To be sensitive to allergies in our room I'm asking for boxes of plain old original Cheerios only (they are gluten and nut free). No worries if that's not a typical cereal in your family, I've put out the call to the staff at McGovern and should have plenty of extra. You can send in as many boxes you can collect from now until the second week in May. Thanks for your help with this!
SUPPORT YOUR ROCKING READER!
Students in Room 3 just finished a reading unit called Be the Boss of your Own Reading. The strategies the children have for solving tricky words are outstanding! So as reading words on the page becomes more automatic, the work of comprehension becomes even more important. One skill we're practicing that will help ALL children get better at this work is stopping to think about what's going on in the story and doing a 2-3 sentence retell at the end of every chapter or chunk of books. Listen to hear if your child is comprehending the problem and solution of their books, and if not, encourage them to do back and reread. This will be the heart of the work we do for the rest of the year!
I hope everyone has a fun and enjoyable break with your children next week!
