We are taking the week off from spelling and math homework! Students are only bringing home one non-fiction book to spend 15 minutes with each night. Use the anchor chart below to help you slow your child down to learn as much from each page as possible!
This week we wrapped up our second units in both Readers' and Writers' Workshop. Monday we will launch new units where children will be encouraged to read and write non-fiction text. I'm so excited for this next venture in our learning together. By nature, first graders are so curious about the world around us. These units will give children the opportunity to learn, explore, and become experts in science, social studies, and other real-life topics that totally spark their interest! How fun!
You can support this new learning at home in a number of ways: - Visit the Medway library and encourage your child to look for non-fiction texts that interest them. - Tune in to programs on PBS like Wild Kratts, and ask your child to notice what an expert scientist sounds like and have them mimic that voice when they read their non-fiction books. - Help your child make a list of real-life topics that interest them. I hope your child comes home eager to share all the neat facts they learn from their books! UPCOMING DATES Monday, November 16th- early release day for parent-teacher conferences Wednesday, November 25th- Rm. 3 performance at 10:15, students dismissed at noon Thursday & Friday November 26-27th- Thanksgiving break, no school Friday, December 4th- early release day for parent-teacher conferences Happy Friday!
Save the Date! Students will come home today with a copy of Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem Give Thanks. We will work on memorizing the poem this month to recite as part of our Thanksgiving performance on Wednesday, November 25 at 10:15. Formal invitations to the performance will go out next week, but mark your calendar now! Giving Back McGovern School's Pre-K class has organized a food drive for the Medway Food Pantry and we're all invited to participate. If your child would like to contribute, please have them bring in non-perishable food items to add to the collection box. NO SCHOOL WEDNESDAY We will observe Veteran's Day on Wednesday November 11th. This is a reminder that there is no school. Number Stories This weekend, turn any event you can into a number story! For example- Lily had 7 birthday candles, she blew 4 out. How many candles are still lit? Have a great weekend! |
