Take Home Blue Bags
Your child will bring home an assortment of books in their blue bag Monday-Thursday. These books are a great fit to support the reading work your child is doing in class. The most important thing is that children are reading for 20 minutes each night. They can choose from their blue bag, RAZ Kids, or books from home.
You may wonder how the books in their bags are selected. Children pick out about 10 books from both the independent and instructional reading level they are working on at school. Some of the independent level texts may seem easy for your child since they are familiar with them, however, the purpose of these books is to develop fluency, apply reading comprehension strategies, and to notice and use text features. These independent books are meant to give your child a feeling of success. Books with more "tricky words" are meant to stretch your child and encourage them to use their strategies, but should never be frustratingly difficult.
In class we've talked a lot about good reading habits. One good habit your child has learned is to reread, 'so that you can see more and more each time'. New details pop out in the story that help him/her understand books in even bigger ways! So please encourage your child to read the same book to you more than once over the week and point out how much smoother their voice sounds or ask them to tell you what they learned or notice about their book.
The most important thing about reading at home is that it becomes an enjoyable habit. Take turns, talk about books, listen to a book on tape in the car, whatever it takes to make your child see reading as a fun part of every day life!
Math Home Links
Most days your child will come home with a Home Link from our math curriculum to support that day's lesson. If your child happens to lose their worksheet or needs support, you can always access the curriculum online through Everyday Math's personalized home feature called Connect Ed. The children visit this site often in the computer lab and are very familiar with how to log in and access the features. Should you want to get to our site at home, click here and find Room 3. Your child's log in info is taped inside their BEE folder.
