Happy New Year! 2017 has gotten off to a fresh start in room 3 as we have dove into new units in all curriculum areas.
In Reader's Workshop we've started a new unit called Readers Get to Know the Characters in Their Books. This unit is all about thinking about what character's are thinking and feeling in a story and noticing how it changes. We've had a lot of fun reading some of my favorite titles including Kevin Henke's Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and Peter Brown's Mr. Tiger Goes Wild.
As writers, the children are writing small moment stories again. In this unit we're looking to real authors to learn about their craft and what makes stories fun to read. We've spent a lot of time talking about how small moment story ideas come from anytime an author feels a strong emotion- so a time you've been surprised, scared, excited, embarrassed, etc. Over the next month, please encourage your child to notice those small moment stories and practice telling the story across their fingers.
In Fundations this week, children learned about the suffix s and how it is tricky. Somtimes it sounds like an s and sometimes is sounds like a z.
In math, our new unit explores place value and revisits previously taught concepts as well. As always, I encourage parents to check out the Do Anytime Activities described in the family letter that went home at the beginning of the unit.
As part of our social studies learning this week we talked about Dr. Martin Luther King and why we have a special holiday to remember his good work.
Just a reminder, there is no school Friday the 13th and Monday the 16th. If you're looking for fun things to do with your children, check out the Medway Library for great ideas! Here is a list of things happening there this month:
