In some ways it is hard to believe that we only have 25 more days together in first grade, but when I look at how much the children in room 3 have grown since September it is clear they are ready to embark on second grade! I am in awe of how much each child in our class can do, and the goals they've set for themselves and have achieved already. See below for more information on what we'll cover in our curriculum for the rest of the year and important dates.
Reader's Workshop- Our final reading unit is called Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons. This unit helps children read fiction for comprehension by digging deep into story elements: character, setting, plot, and lessons learned. You'll be amazed by how far your child has come with their ability to retell a story or chapter after they read. Currently, we are working on identifying what theme or message is learned from stories. You can support this work at home by asking your child to retell whenever they finish reading a story or chapter to you.
Writer's Workshop- The authors in Room 3 are working hard on their own book series! This project will take us through May and into June. Each child has created their own realistic fiction character and is writing multiple books about the many adventures of their character. We're creating boxed sets out of cereal boxes for students to store their series in. See below for an important save-the-date when parents are invited to come and join us for an Author Showcase to share our series boxed sets. PLEASE NOTE WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING ANY EMPTY BOXES OF GLUTEN AND PEANUT FREE CEREALS!
Math- We have wrapped up Unit 8 and will be testing this week. Therefore, there will not be any math homework assigned until Thursday night. We have one more unit left to go in math, which will mostly revisit the most important math standards of grade 1. Students will do more with measurement and counting money. Please check your child's backpack for the Unit 9 Family Letter with ideas for how you can extend their learning at home.
Science-We will be reading and talking about animal habitats this month as we prepare for our field trip to the Southwick Zoo. The timing is perfect, as the frogs we've been observing since February are beginning to sprout legs and will soon be ready for a new habitat of their own.
