We are eight days in to first grade, and what a great time we are having so far! Today's rain is a welcomed relief after such a hot first week of school. I've been amazed at how well the students have handled the unseasonably warm weather.
As the weather cools down, our curriculum is heating up! Students spent the first week of school learning the procedures, routines, and expectations of both Reader's and Writer's Workshop- which will be the heart of our literacy learning this year. In math, students have practiced our daily calendar and counting routines and have learned a few games such as Penny Dice that we'll play throughout the year on special math days.
Students completed a number of different tests this week in reading, writing, and math. All are specifically designed to provide a baseline of their performance at the beginning of first grade. It will be tremendously exciting to see how far they come when we compare their baseline tests to what they can do come June!
Over the first two short weeks of school we've read many stories and poems together such as Chrysanthemum, How Full is Your Bucket, and Ish. We also started a shared novel, Charlotte's Web- that I will be reading to the students in small increments over the next month or so.
Have a wonderful three day weekend!
