Update from the Classroom:
Reader's Workshop
Did you know that your first grader is part of the Super Secret Detective Agency? That's right! They've earned their badges as Word Detectives. They have so many strategies in their toolkits for what to do if a word in their book looks tricky. We are having a blast learning about reading strategies in our latest reading unit. You can encourage your word detective to use their tools when they read by reminding them to check the picture, check the word parts, and check if what they're thinking makes sense in the story.
Here are some photos of the children enjoying the partner reading time of our readers' workshop outside on an unseasonably warm October afternoon.

Writer's Workshop
We wrapped up our first unit of the year writing narratives and we've launched into poetry. Children are exploring the relationships between music and poetry and using poetry to write using our five senses. This week we went on a nature walk and wrote about all that we saw and then practiced using the tune to London Bridge is Falling Down to make up our own songs. Have your child share their November version of London Bridge with you!
Math
We will also finish up our second math unit of the year this week. Everyday math is a spiral curriculum, which means in any given unit we will cover a variety of math standards and continue to come back to them throughout the year. In this unit we talked a lot about pairs of numbers that make ten and different counting strategies. Check out the HOMEWORK tab on my website for information on how you can access our daily lessons online to learn more about what we're doing in math.
Classmate Writing
As a supplement to our social emotional curriculum, we spent a few minutes each day over the first month of school getting to know each other. The students asked each other questions and worked together to create sentences and make a story about each and every classmate. I will put the photos of their work into a slideshow you can expect in your email soon.
