Greetings! March has brought with it new units in all subjects. March also marks the beginning of a birthday boom in room 3, so I wanted to remind parents that you are always welcome to come in and be a mystery reader during a convenient time for you in your child's birthday month. Please just email me if you're interested.

Reader's Workshop
As readers, students are taking on the task of decoding and understanding longer, stronger words. Our latest unit is called Readers Have Big Jobs to Do, and children are thinking critically about their strategies for attacking new words. This is the anchor chart we're using in class to think about our strategies.

- Friday- March 17 is a half day of school. It is also an early dismissal day for students. We will have a regular snack that day but lunch will not be served. Dismissal will be at 12:00.
- Also next Friday, your child will bring home a report card for Term 2. Please look it over and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. We do not have a formal spring conference time but I am happy to meet. Please let me know and we will set up a day and time if you would like.
- Thanks for all of the donations for the basket raffle. Keep them coming! Our theme is Backyard Fun. Thanks to Jackie Kinsman for organizing!

Our latest unit is called Readers Have Big Jobs to Do, and children are thinking critically about their strategies for attacking new words. The guiding questions in this unit, when thinking about tricky words, are: does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? Use these questions when supporting your child's reading at home!
Writer's Workshop
As writers, children are learning how to write their opinions. Thank you for sending in their collections, as they provided a great stepping stone into this unit. The kids had plenty to say about which Shopkin, toy car, or rock was their favorite and gave really convincing reasons! Over the next few weeks we'll bridge this learning into writing reviews of our favorite restaurants, movies, shows, and books. If your family visits a restaurant or new store, be sure to ask your child their opinion and have them give lots of reasons.
Science
We were so lucky on Thursday to have a visit from Mrs. Atomic A, a guest scientist from High Tech High Touch Science. She taught the children all about the science of sound through a number of hands-on experiments. We learned that sound travels best through solids and we even made our own kazoos!

Math
We are cruising along in unit 6, and I'm so impressed by room 3's mathematicians! We continue to work on addition fact fluency through various strategies and explaining our thinking. Be on the look out for the Family Letter for Unit 7, which will come home next week and will have lots of great ideas for supporting your child at home.
