I can't believe the calendar says December already. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and that this month has gotten off to a joyous start. Children in room 3 will learn so much and have fun in the process this month. Here are a few updates from the classroom:
Report Cards and Conferences
Report cards will be distributed on Tuesday. Additionally, I look forward to discussing your child's progress at our conference. There will be a note on your child's report card that confirms our scheduled date and time. As a reminder, children will be dismissed at noon this Thursday the 8th and next Tuesday the 13th for conferences.
The Mitten Project
Tomorrow we will read a story called The Mitten Tree about a woman who selflessly knits mittens for children in need. This will launch a voluntary class community service learning project where any of our students who are able can bring in a pair of gloves or mittens to be passed along to children in our greater community in need. More details will come home in a letter tomorrow.
Readers Workshop
First graders are getting super smart about non-fiction topics this month in reading. Their natural curiosity for science and social studies topics is astounding. It has been such a joy watching children dive deep into their reading and pull out fascinating facts and bits of information.
Over the next few weeks, room 3 will be teaming up with our literacy coach, Mrs. Baldiga and our neighbor, Mrs. Lomuscio to provide even more flexible strategy groups during our reader's workshop time. As teachers, we want to work together to target each child's reading needs and help push them forward. So you may hear your child talk about meeting in room 2 or Mrs. Baldiga's room and hopefully they'll have great reading strategies to show off to you!
Science
This month we will investigate the states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Through reading and a few hands on activities, children should have lots to share about states of matter at the end of the month.
