How is it already December? The old saying "time flies when you're having fun" certainly rings true in first grade at McGovern. Speaking of fun...what an outstanding performance by students last week! I was so proud of how hard each student worked to memorize their songs and poem. They shook off their nerves, took to the stage, and did a marvelous job! I wasn't able to get a clear photo-but here's a snapshot to capture the memory of our special morning last week!
This week we're saying goodbye, as one of our classmates is moving to a nearby town. The class had fun signing this t-shirt as a parting gift to wish our friend well at his new school.
This week students will return to bringing home a combination of fiction and non-fiction books to read. In class, we continue to focus on non-fiction and this week we are practicing how to retell all that we learn from our non-fiction books. Please continue to encourage your child to slow down when reading non-fiction to learn as much from every page as possible. After reading, students are expected to be able to pull out the gist- or the main topic, some details, and why those details are important. Here is the anchor chart we're using:

This Friday, December 4th is another Early Release Day for Parent Teacher Conferences. Students will be dismissed at noon. Lunch will not be served, but you can still pack a snack for your child.
Literacy Bingo boards are due this Friday, the 4th as well. Please make sure your child's name is on their bingo board.
